FSSAI Central Registration is granted by the Central Licensing Authority and is applicable to businesses involved in high-capacity production or operating across multiple states. It is also mandatory for specific categories such as 100% export-oriented units, importers of food products, large warehouses, cold storage units, and food businesses operating in airports, seaports, or under central government jurisdiction.
The registration process involves submitting Form B along with detailed documentation such as business structure, production capacity, food safety management plan, and infrastructure details. Due to the scale of operations, the application undergoes strict scrutiny, and a detailed inspection of the premises is often conducted by food safety officers to ensure compliance with hygiene and safety standards.
Once approved, the business receives a 14-digit FSSAI license number, which must be printed on all food packaging and displayed at the business premises. This license is valid for 1 to 5 years and must be renewed before its expiry. FSSAI Central Registration also requires businesses to maintain strict records, follow standard operating procedures, and comply with periodic inspections conducted by authorities.
